23 June 2009

Pentelikon Estate

KPMG's 5th IT Forum themed BPM and SOA: Two components, one direction took place on June 23rd at Pentelikon Estate. More than 200 executives from the IT field and other industry sectors attended the event. This year's keynote speakers were Paul Harmon and Matjaz B. Juric and they were accompanied by a number of distinguished, high-ranking Greek executives who shared their experience of working on projects that aimed at improving business processes and automating them using SOA.

Paul Harmon is Executive Editor and Founder of Business Process Trends (BPTrends), as well as Chief Consultant and Founder of Enterprise Alignment, a professional services company providing educational and consulting services to managers interested in understanding and implementing process change. He is a noted consultant, author, and analyst who has been working on the application of new technologies to real-world business problems. In the course of the event, Paul discussed The Business Process Imperative, presented optimized practices for carrying out a BPM project, and explained, using real-life examples, how corporations can benefit from such a venture. He also pinpointed the forces which drive the emphasis on operational excellence and searched out the essence of the business process management approach, the steps an organization needs to take in order to become more process-centric, and the BPM technologies and practices that it can begin to incorporate immediately.

Matjaz B. Juric is an Associate Professor at the University of Maribor, President of SOA Competency Center, and Director of the Science Park Project. Having more than 15 years of experience, he has authored or coauthored five books and he is a reviewer, program committee member, and conference organizer. He has been involved in several large-scale projects and has served as a consultant on SOA projects for several large companies. In his presentation SOA for Business Flexibility, Matjaz analysed the approach that an enterprise should adopt in deploying a SOA project, as well as the factors that determine the success of such a venture. Besides the advantages and disadvantages of such an architecture, he also identified the most important business and technology goals that an organization needs to attain, such as flexibility, agility, competitiveness, and gradual transition to a process-driven model. Finally, Matjaz touched upon the changing role of IT, which can (and should) become more of an innovator and the driver of changes.
