Time is coming for the industries falling under the European Union Greenhouse Gas Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) to report their green house gasses (GHG) emissions. By the end of March 2007 all companies in the Member States will have to submit verified reports for their GHG emissions, which should be followed by the equivalent emission allowances, according to Directive 2003/87/EC.
In Greece, companies included in the National Allocation Plan (NAP) must submit their verified emissions reports to the Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works and get this information reported in the Greek registry.
KPMG in Greece has been involved in the project of structuring the national verification scheme and registry. In the period 2005-2006 KPMG worked both with large and small companies to set procedures and report their data.
In this framework, KPMG has helped a big cement manufacturing company to develop procedures and working instructions in order to monitor and report its Elefsina, Kamari, Patra and Thessasloniki plants’ CO2 emissions in line with Commission’s decision 2004/156/EC on “establishing guidelines for the monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions pursuant to Directive 2003/87/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council”. Procedures have been designed to use the information stored in the existing ERP system and they have been integrated with the existing quality management system according to ISO 9001 and environmental management system according to ISO 14001.
The Greek firm has also worked with a small company in the lime industry to set procedures to monitor its emissions and produce the required reports.
